Osho Quotes On Life: A Man is Created By His Company

“Today’s climate is skeptical. Even the child is filled with doubt, he is skeptical. In the old days, even the elderly believed; the whole climate was filled with faith, trust. They were people in good health.”

Talks on the sayings of Jesus Christ

And as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, as they were fishermen. And he said to them: follow me, and I will make you fishers of humans. And they immediately left their nets and followed him.

This will happen many times in the life of Jesus. You will be amazed at the quality of people among whom and with whom he moved. Simple people: farmers, peasants, fishermen, carpenters, but real people, not fake.

People who live with nature are real because with nature you have to be real or it won’t obey you. You have to be alive with nature, otherwise you won’t be able to deal with it. The more you surround yourself with unnatural things, the more unnatural you become. If you live surrounded only by mechanisms, you will become a mechanism yourself.

It is said that a man is known by his company. And I tell you: a person is created by his company. If you live surrounded by mechanical devices, as modern man lives, little by little you will become unreal. If you live with nature – with the trees, the rocks, the sea, the stars, the clouds, the sun – you cannot be unreal, you cannot be fake. You have to be real, because when you meet nature, it creates something natural in you. By constantly responding to nature, you become natural yourself.

The man who lives with nature always believes. The farmer, going to sow, must believe. If he doubts, he will never sow the seed – because a thousand and one doubts are possible: whether this year the land will yield the same as last year, or not. Who knows? – the earth may have decided otherwise. Who knows whether it will rain or not? Who knows about the sun – whether it will rise tomorrow morning or not? Sitting in an arm-chair surrounded by your books, you may doubt, there is nothing to risk, but if the farmer in the field who works the land doubts, he is lost; if the fisherman doubts, he is lost.

From living with nature comes trust. Hope is natural to man, just as health is natural; doubt is unnatural, just as sickness is unnatural. I’m not talking about the modern child – perhaps the modern child is not born in trust because it is born in an atmosphere of skepticism.

I once read a story: a mother told her daughter a story – the child was restless, got up late and the mother told a story to put her to sleep. She said: “There was a princess – very beautiful, wonderful… and very wise, very loving. The entire royal court loved and respected her. She was very good, especially to animals. One day she saw a frog in the yard. She was afraid that someone would step on it and took the frog to her bedroom. And in the morning she was amazed: the frog turned into a beautiful prince! And this prince asked for her hand.”

At that moment, the mother looked at her daughter and felt that she was completely skeptical. Her eyes, her demeanor, everything said, “No, I can’t believe it.” Her face was written in complete disbelief. Her mother asked, “What, you don’t believe it?” The little girl said, “No… and I bet the princess’s mother didn’t either!”

Today’s climate is skeptical. Even the child is filled with doubt – he doubts, he is skeptical. In the old days, even the elderly believed; the whole climate was filled with faith, trust. They were people in good health.

Look at yourself – every time you doubt, something shrinks inside you; you are getting small and petty. You harden, die and no longer flow – you freeze. When faith occurs, you flow again. The ice melts and you expand, become big. When you trust, you reach the peak intensity of life, and when you doubt, you fall into death.

Because modern man has no confidence, he has become so strongly attracted to drugs. There seems to be no other way to achieve the sense of expansion of being and consciousness. Drugs are chemical methods to feel for a few moments or for a few hours an expansion of consciousness. Trust gives you this easily and freely. Confidence gives you this not for a few moments – it becomes an eternal quality in you. And trust has no side effects!

If you ask me, I’ll tell you: faith is the only reliable drug if you’re looking for mind expansion – and those who have never known what that mind expansion is haven’t lived yet. Consciousness can expand and can continue to expand, waves of bliss going to the very ends of being, expanding with its infinity. When you expand, you become part of the whole; when you shrink, you become an island.
