Penka Tzaneva About Baba Vanga

Peter Ivanov About Baba Vanga

Story told by captain Peter Ivanov – former inspector at the Passport Department of Bulgaria

In March of 1960, I was hired as an inspector at the Passport Department of Bulgaria – a sub-department of the police. My job description was to assist the border units of the police, and control whether they follow the procedures and standards when conducting their professional duties. My job essence was the reason to meet with Baba Vanga.

I heard many stories about her phenomenal gift to foretell the future and to read on people with unbelievable accuracy, but I didn’t have much interest to meet with her.

I was quite surprised how many people were waiting for days to get approval to pass through the border and get to Petrich – where Baba Vanga lived. Very few of them were disclosing the truth that there were going to meet with the prophetess. Most of them knew very well, that it was forbidden by the People’s Republic of Bulgaria to go and visit prophets, oracles, mediums, and all other gifted people who were widely rejected by to communistic regime at the time. That is why people were coming with all sorts of stories such as visiting relatives, visiting relatives who were conscripts, visiting a national celebration days, visiting a doctor, and so on and so forth.

Just in case our border agency required documents that prove the necessity of the respective visit.

There were some people who were declaring that they would visit the neighbouring village (across the border), but once they got there, they were trying to reach Petrich. Some even took the risk to drive to Petrich with their own car, because if they had to go with a bus or a train, they had to fill out all declaration documents including the prove why they are vising Bulgaria.

In some cases, some custom officers were showing condescension and were issuing admission passes to people that wanted to get to Petrich. This was all in violation of the established norms and rules.

Baba Vanga stories with visitors - story 10

I tried to get more information about Baba Vanga from colleagues of mine. The official version was that she doesn’t tell anything accurately, and she has accomplices that help her with collecting information about her visitors.

I really wanted to disclose for myself whether Baba Vanga is only a myth, or she really had phenomenal skills to read on you as if you are an open book in front of her.

My interest got even bigger, when some newspapers and magazines published a couple of articles about her.

Later, the famous at the time soviet magazine called “Communist” published some interesting materials about some scientific researches done on people with supernatural skills. The phenomenon of Baba Vanga was also mentioned in the magazine. Essentially, scientists were trying to solve and empirically explain those natural occurrences.

Once I discussed those articles with some of my superiors, but they told me that still the prohibition to visit Baba Vanga is in place.

I was completely convinced in the phenomenal skills of Baba Vanga in the summer of 1964, when I was sent on a business trip in Petrich. For three days, I had to inspect the work of the local police department regarding the issuance of ID documents and passports, as well as the address registration of the local citizens. I didn’t even thought to spent time on the Baba Vanga case.

Once I did my inspection in a building outside the town on my first day, we took a police car to go back. Infront of one house, I noticed hundreds of people waiting. I asked my colleagues why are those people here, and they told me that this was the house of Baba Vanga. I asked them to drop me off here, and they can go, as I will return home on foot.

I entered into the yard of the house and noticed men, women, and children who were sitting or standing nearby the fence. Judging by their clothes and luggage, I figured out that some of those people were here for days.

At one moment, a girl came out of the house and with a loud voice said: “I told you already, Baba Vanga is very tired already, and she will not take in more people for today.”

I thought she felt sick because it was in the middle of the summer, and it was very hot. I felt a little sorry, that I didn’t come at the right time, and I turned around to go to my hotel. I made 2-3 steps, and I heard another voice saying: “This man that is near the entrance – let him come.”

At the door, behind the girl I saw Baba Vanga. She looked exactly like the way people were describing her to me  – middle aged, average height, dressed very modestly. I headed towards her, passing by all those people who were looking me somewhat jealously. I was most likely very thrilled and emotionally moved, as I tripped on the rug that was at the front door. The girl invited me to go in, and I entered into Baba Vanga’s room. It was the typical rural set up – there was nothing different than the room of my parents who were living in the countryside. The same handmade rugs and table cloths placed everywhere. The same quietness, tidiness, and modesty… with my entering I was trying to stay as calm as possible so I don’t think about myself or my job.

I was sure that nobody provided information about me, as the whole meeting happened purely by chance. I didn’t even sleep on sugar, which was the common practice of most people who were visiting Baba Vanga. I didn’t stop asking myself the question how this blind woman staying in this semi-dark room found out that I was near the entrance of her yard, and she calls me when I headed back home – despite the fact that she is very tired.

Baba Vanga started the conversation in a loud voice. She was asking questions, and few seconds later she was giving the answers herself: “Where do you work? You are Sofia, near the Lion Bridge, in a big building. Your office is right beside the chief inspector…he respects you very much. What do you have on your shoulders? Oh I see epaulettes with stars. You will be promoted fairly soon.”

She guessed with unbelievable accuracy where I work, and that my room is nearby my superior, but how she saw my epaulettes – I was wearing civil clothes? And she saw the stars (I was captain at the time). For the promotion I didn’t believe her – at least two years had to pass, if I was to be promoted at all.

Baba Vanga didn’t stay on this subject for a long time, and she quickly changed it by telling me things about my parents. She accurately guessed that they live in the countryside and that I have two brothers and a sister, saying exactly where they lived as well. Then she stood quiet for few seconds and said: “ I see a fresh grave…oh this was your father.” Indeed my father passed away recently, and we buried him where he lived. She carried on: “I see that you will move out of your current apartment to a new one”. At this moment, involuntarily I looked at the church-lamp  that was attached on the wall – I was astonished. Baba Vanga’s back was facing me, and she managed to capture the moment when I looked at that lamp. “Just like most elderly women, I also have a church-lamp – but I don’t abuse with it.”

Most probably Baba Vanga wanted to highlight infront of me that she was a strong believer, that she was a Christian. Nevertheless, back at those days, all sorts of religions, or paranormal events were widely rejected and forbidden by the Government, so that is why she mentioned that she does not abuse with it.

Few months after the meeting with Baba Vanga, absolutely by chance I met a former colleague of mine whom I hadn’t seen for a long time. He offered me a very cosy apartment that was very close to where I worked at the time. One of his relatives was moving out, so literary in 3 days I received the approval from the municipality to move in.

Thanks to the fact that I lived close to my work, I was part of a police action for capturing a dangerous prisoner that managed to escape from prison. I was awarded a special watch given to me by the minister of internal affairs. Shortly after that I was promoted to the rank – major. Here is how all of Baba Vanga’s readings came true to the very last word.

In a little while, I had a roommate in my new apartment – Alexander Varbanov, a musician from the Bulgarian Philharmonic orchestra. He insisted to meet with Baba Vanga, and one year later I took him to Petrich to meet with the prophetess. Even before we entered the room of Baba Vanga she said in a loud voice: “Peter it’s you again – why do you bring this guy with you?” She started to literary yell at him saying: “Why did you leave your family, your little girl? You are so greedy to get rich. You won’t have family, you won’t have happiness, now get out.”

I was so surprise that she called me on my name which I haven’t told her on our first meeting. What was even more overwhelming was how she guessed all those details of my roommate – without having his sugar cube. Alexander was completely shattered – he didn’t even had the courage to ask whether he will marry his new girlfriend. He just left the room all sweaty and with tears in his eyes. I felt very droopingly when I saw the look of his face.

Six months later, Alexander went to Austria together with his colleagues from the orchestra. His wife committed suicide by jumping from the 4th floor. In the spring of 1990 he came back to Bulgaria and did visit me. I went downstairs and saw his white Mercedes and his daughter in it, who was living with him in Germany. He told me that he has everything (ei. financially secured), but he is very unhappy at the same time.  This was the moment when I remembered everything that Baba Vanga said about him – she was right again.
