Story by Rayna Furnadzhieva from Berovo village, Plovdiv province
In 1974 after 12 years of marriage I divorced with my husband. He had a relationship with a woman who was 20 years younger than him, and after our divorce he got married her. I left alone with my two sons. A little after this event I got sick badly. Stayed at few clinics in Sofia. Finally they hospitalized me at the general hospital in Pazardzhik – at the neurology department. Doctors made all sorts of examination, but they didn’t give me a diagnoses. Then they tried to put me back on my fee through electroshock therapies. I stayed immobilized on my bed for 55 days.
I had heard about the phenomenal skills of Baba Vanga through some classmates of mine from university. I asked my mother to go and see her, and although she was skeptical and didn’t believe in such prophesy skills, she went to Petrich to see Baba Vanga. Unfortunately she wasn’t home at the time. My mother got back and discharged me from the hospital and brought me home – at this time doctors were giving me about three months of life. Then she took the train and went to Petrich again. She had cried in the train the entire travel. By chance my mother met a woman that was close to Baba Vanga, and she heard about my sad story, the woman promised to arrange the meeting.
Straight from the doorstep Baba Vanga told my mother: – you come for Rayna, but she is not sick from a disease. Why you took so long to come to me – ask me.
My mother asked her only one question – will I live, so I can raise my children (my sons were 6 and 12). At the moment I can’t help you as the Government does not allow me. Go to Atanas Dzambazov from Levunovo village – he will help you.
My mother headed out to the village at once. When she found her house she saw many people waiting in her yard. He called my mother and told her that he was expecting her. My mother left him one of my clothes, and he gave her a sheet of paper, inside which there were a couple of smaller one that were wrapped. I had to sleep on those sheets for a couple of nights.
My mother threw away the first sheet at a cross road. Then every Tuesday she burnt one sheet – this is what the witch doctor had instructed her. We never opened the sheets to see what’s written in them, but thanks to this man with those paranormal skills, I was brought back to life. We were so thankful to Baba Vanga as well, as she told us about Atanas.

Just a week after the ritual with the sheets, I was back on my feet.
I had a friend, she was a family doctor, who we called hundreds of times to help me when I was very sick. My mother had told her our experience with Baba Vanga. When she saw me standing on my feet – she started crying out of joy.
In the next week, she went down to Petrich to seek help for her sick brother. Through the help of Baba Vanga and one professor from France, they prolonged the life of my friend’s brother with 5 years.
Years later, when my older son was 17 he went to the ER in Pazardzhik with inflamed appendicitis. The doctor said that we took him late. My son had drainage and 40 degrees fever. I stayed at the hospital, and my mother went to visit Baba Vanga again.
Very tired, my mother sit at the bench in front of Baba Vanga’s house, and dropped off to sleep. At one moment, she felt that someone was fondling her head – it was Baba Vanga. She told her: – Go home, don’t worry, your grandson won’t die. This doctor that your daughter brought from Sofia will help him. Tell him to drink tea from marigold – 100 ml of water and a pinch of marigold. Let him drink 3 cups a day, for the duration of 15 days, and then to stop drinking it for 15 days. Follow the procedure for 3 months.
We discharged my son from the Pazardzhik hospital and took him to 1st General Hospital in Sofia, to be examined by doctor Angelov. He performed the surgery and told us that the appendix was very close to burst. Then my son recovered completely.
Since I wanted to visit Baba Vanga in person so much, one day I went to Petrich as well. While I was waiting, a family entered – a woman with her husband. They were carrying a cactus pot. I was close, so I could hear the conversation. Suddenly Baba Vanga said: – He is coming, he is coming, make him way. Tell me child how did it happen? He was riding his bike on the shore, he slipped and fell in the water.
The mother started crying. Baba Vange went on: – You want to cut the pear tree in your yard. Don’t touch it, your child loves it very much. Prepare your home-made halavah, and take it to his grave. Why didn’t you buy him the jeans that he wanted so much? Buy him the jeans now.
This family just found the real truth of how their child have died. His spirit had obviously connected with the prophetess and she was re-sending his words.
When I entered the room, the doorman asked to be quiet and wait for few minutes. I saw Baba Vanga was holding the cactus pot and she was moving it up and down saying: – You can go now child, this is enough, please release me from your presence…
Our conversation was very short, as there wasn’t really much more to ask when she said: – You will be alone. I see that you will be alone for your entire life.
This exactly how it happened. I had two other unsuccessful relationships. Now I am over 60, and I am still alone.
I am a school teacher for children. I am happy with my children and my grandchildren – they are the purpose of my life now.
When I was in Petrich to see Baba Vanga, I brought two other colleagues of mine. For one of them – his mother went through a surgery – diagnosed with cancer. Baba Vanga just said: – Whatever the doctor said – this is it. My other colleague had some problems with his nerves. She advised him to go and visit mineral pools regularly, and gradually he will improve. This is how it happened.
In 1994 I got sick again. My results were not very good, and I was about to undergo a surgery.
I went to Petrich in the evening. Baba Vanga accepted me on the next morning and told: -You go to Pirogov hospital and visit your relative there. She will find you a doctor. Don’t cancel the surgery – do it!
I told her that I am very scared, as there are some risks that I can die on the surgery table. She grabbed my hands gently and said: – Don’t be scared, you will not die. God is protecting you.
Baba Vanga was right again – the surgery was very successful and I recovered.
For me and my family Baba Vanga is a great woman – a real Saint. I was praying for her to be in good health to be able to help all other misfortunate people that needed her blessings. She was very up front, yelling when she had to, but at the same time she was so comforting and calming when people needed this the most – I will say it again, she was a real Saint that I had the great honour to meet in person.
When Baba Vanga passed away, I think we lost a priceless sun that was giving warmth to our beautiful country.
